Kingsport, Tennessee — August 25, 2026 — The American Academy of General Physicians (AAGP) is proud to announce Dr. Rakesh Ravikumar Nair as the recipient of its first annual Overcomer Award, recognizing a physician who has overcome significant obstacles and adversity on the journey to becoming a General Practice physician.
The inaugural contest attracted an exceptional group of physicians who shared deeply personal stories of perseverance, determination, sacrifice, and triumph. The entries were compelling and, in many cases, humbling, making the selection of a single winner a difficult decision.
After careful consideration, Dr. Nair was selected as the inaugural recipient of the AAGP Overcomer Award.
Dr. Nair’s journey to becoming a physician in the United States began in Kerala, India. As a young man, he volunteered with the Red Cross, caring for patients in isolation units and assisting vulnerable residents in state-funded shelter homes. Those early experiences helped shape his belief that medicine is not simply about treating disease, but about showing up for people who may otherwise be forgotten.
After medical school, Dr. Nair came to the United States in 2008 to pursue a Master of Public Health at Florida International University. He arrived in Miami with no family, close friends, financial safety net, or clear guidance system. During the economic crisis, he worked tirelessly to obtain a graduate assistantship while attending school and contributing to research.
His path to becoming a physician in the United States was marked by extraordinary perseverance. While pursuing his graduate degree, research work, and USMLE examinations, Dr. Nair traveled by bus to clinical externships and observerships at Baptist Hospital. A commute that would have taken approximately 20 minutes by car required two buses and nearly an hour and a half each way. He made that journey while simultaneously managing graduate school, research, examination preparation, and significant financial pressure.
After earning his MPH and continuing his work at FIU, Dr. Nair secured a preliminary surgery residency position at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach in 2013. He spent two years gaining extensive clinical experience, but was unable to secure a categorical position to continue his surgical training, in part because of restrictions affecting foreign medical graduates on visas.
That setback ultimately changed the direction of his career. Following the advice of a mentor, Dr. Frederick Schild, Dr. Nair pursued an unrestricted Florida medical license and considered General Practice. He came to recognize that General Practice was not a fallback—it was a calling that had been present throughout his life.
In 2015, Dr. Nair began caring for frail elderly Medicare and Medicaid patients in their homes and assisted living facilities. Many were homebound, medically complex, socially isolated, and facing significant barriers to accessing healthcare. Rather than waiting for vulnerable patients to reach a clinic, Dr. Nair went to them, providing care in their homes and developing a deeper understanding of their medical, social, and family circumstances.
His experiences eventually led to leadership roles as Medical Director and Site Medical Director, as well as opportunities to mentor students, young physicians, and healthcare team members. Today, Dr. Nair is an Assistant Professor at Florida International University, where he teaches medical students, cares for patients through the Green Family Foundation Mobile Health Center, and mentors students through the NeighborhoodHELP program.
In 2024, Dr. Nair learned about the American Academy of General Physicians and pursued board certification in General Practice. For him, earning board certification affirmed the professional path that had brought together his experiences in community medicine, public health, primary care, chronic disease management, leadership, and education.
One of the most meaningful images from Dr. Nair’s journey is the contrast between his past and present. Years earlier, he stood at bus stops before sunrise, relying on public transportation to reach hospitals and pursue his dream of practicing medicine in the United States. Later, as a home-based primary care physician, those same roads carried him to the homes of patients who needed care the most. As Dr. Nair reflected, perseverance does not erase hardship, but it can transform hardship into purpose.
The award was created to recognize physicians whose journeys demonstrate that the path to medicine is not always easy or straightforward. It celebrates those who have faced substantial challenges yet continued to pursue their calling to care for others and serve their communities.

Dr. Nair’s story ultimately stood out as an extraordinary example of overcoming adversity and refusing to give up on the dream of becoming a physician.”
Dr. Nair’s selection represents the spirit of the Overcomer Award: resilience in the face of adversity, perseverance when the path becomes difficult, and a commitment to serving patients despite the obstacles encountered along the way.
AAGP congratulates Dr. Nair on this well-deserved honor and extends its sincere appreciation to every physician who submitted an entry. Their stories serve as an inspiration to colleagues, students, and future physicians who may face challenges of their own.
