American Academy of General Practitioners Announces New “Overcomer Award” Program
Honoring remarkable stories of resilience in the field of General Practice
The American Academy of General Practitioners (A.A.G.P.) is proud to announce the launch of its newest recognition program, The Overcomer Award, created to celebrate physicians whose journeys into General Practice reflect grit, courage, and an unshakable commitment to patient care.
Across the Academy, members come from many different backgrounds and life experiences. Some have dreamed of becoming General Practice Physicians since childhood. Others began their careers in different specialties and later found their purpose through unexpected life events, personal challenges, or professional turning points. The Overcomer Award honors those meaningful stories, the ones that remind us why General Practice is such a vital and human-centered field.
Beginning this year, the A.A.G.P. will select one member annually to receive the Overcomer Award. This honor recognizes a physician who has persevered through adversity and demonstrated unwavering dedication to serving patients and advancing the practice of primary care medicine.
We hear incredible stories from our members, stories of overcoming setbacks, redefining career paths, and staying true to the calling of serving others,” said Mark Lowe of the Academy’s leadership team. “The Overcomer Award allows us to shine a light on those journeys and the people behind them.”
Nominations Now Open
Members may nominate themselves or a colleague. Submissions should highlight:
- The challenges faced
- How the nominee continued to serve with dedication
- The impact they have made on patients, colleagues, or the broader community
The annual submission deadline is June 30.

The first recipient will be recognized at the Academy’s annual gathering, with their story shared to inspire other members and future physicians.
